It took 25 years for anyone to notice a time capsule inside the wall in Pinckney Community High School.
A plaque located in the south entrance of the school is something students walk past everyday. It was until students Prince Hayes and Carson Michaels read the fine print on this plaque. Around the edges in small print it read “The time capsule behind this plaque shall be opened August 21st, 2024.” The students brought this to the attention of faculty members and got the approval to open the capsule. On December 8th, Carson and Prince opened the capsule, accompanied by teachers Ms. Rose and Mr. Hermann who both taught at PCHS in 1999 when the capsule was made. Also there was Assistant Principal Mr. McMurry and Superintendent Mr.Todd.
The boys removed the plaque from the wall and discovered a copper box perfectly placed in the wall. Once they removed the box from the wall they realized that it had been welded shut. The students took the box down to the welding room to get the help from Mr. Smith. Once opened the students began taking out items like old newspapers, VHS tapes, a Star Wars action figure, a pottery piece, and the 1999 yearbook. The yearbook featured pictures of current PCHS faculty member Jesse Cogswell, who won most likely to become principal of Pinckney High School.
Michaels and Hayes now plan to refill and replace the time capsule to be opened 25 years from now. The students expressed that this may be hard as everything is digital nowadays but plan to include as much as possible.
