Has 2026 become the new 2016?

If you have been active on social media recently you would see that the internet has deemed 2026 as “the new 2016”. Trends from 10 years ago are totally back, including fashion, music, and social media.

Even though it was a decade ago, is 2016 worth revisiting?

Fashion in 2016 was very unique, to say the least. Think high-waisted jeans, crop tops, and chucking sneakers…sound familiar?

These looks are slowly coming back with more of a modern take. Big sunglasses, and bright colored clothes are in demand across several stores and brands.

Music in 2016 was at its peak.

The most popular artists of the time were Justin Bieber, Rhinanna, Drake, etc. The music scene in 2026 is seeing a return of pop, R&B, and hip-hop sounds from 2016  and these artists are still owning the Billboard charts to this day.

In 2016, every single that was released was almost guaranteed to have a music video, but with the increase in social media, music videos have become less popular.

Artists are sampling older tracks, and producers are bringing back the vibes of the mid-2010s.

Social media trends are also echoing those of 2016.

TikTok is filled with challenges, dances, and memes reminiscent of the Vine era.

Platforms like Instagram are seeing a return of the curated, highly edited aesthetic, reminiscent of the early days of filters and photo editing apps.

Also on TikTok, the filter called “2016” has become very popular in videos.

The filter is a pink and blue toned overcast that makes the video look nostalgic, often paired with a trendy song that makes you feel like you’re in 2016.

They say history repeats itself, and a decade later 2016 is in full swing.

So, is 2026 really the new 2016?

The similarities in fashion, music, and social media trends suggest it might be. It seems what was once old is new again.
