Throughout the school year you have seen the articles being published by students on The Anchor on a variety of different topics but what actually is the process of a story being published?
The newspaper works in different sections. We have culture/arts/entertainment, features, news, and sports. Each section has a head editor that is in charge of that section followed by around 6 students in that section. We also have an overall head editor that leads the class, and a photo editor, along with an editor for our article that approves all articles.
Students start with meeting with their section editor to discuss article ideas that fall within their section topic, once it is decided on who is writing what the section editor provides spaced out due dates for every student in their section. Students then have that time period to write their article where it needs to be submitted into our website system by the due date where it needs to have a picture, needs to be categorized, and labeled ready for editing. Once that is done the section editor does it and makes any brief edits before labeling ready for proofing where it is sent to our final overhead editor to be approved for publication along with the photo being approved by the photo editor.
If the article is not up to par whether the photo needs changing, the article doesn’t have quality work it can be sent back to the student to be reworked and re-submitted. Once articles are approved Ozias looks for the ready to publish label and puts the articles in the correct section on the website.
